MOREnet & Internet2
Lewis & Clark Resources Available
While many states are gearing up for events from 2003 through
2006, celebrating the Corps of Discovery holds special meaning for Missouri as
the state from whence Lewis and Clark departed in 1804 and returned in 1806.
MOREnet's goal is to facilitate the creation of high-quality
digital resources for Lewis and Clark materials for classroom use. MOREnet is
working together with the eMINTS program, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri State Archives, University of Missouri-Columbia's College of Education, University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Geography, Missouri Historical Society and others to make Lewis and Clark resources unique to Missouri digitally available through the MOREnet network.
More
resources will be added as they become available.
MOREnet Customers Access Internet2
As an Internet2 Sponsored Educational Group Participant (SEGP),
MOREnet provides access for all
its customers to the Internet2 backbone network, Abilene.
MOREnet's backbone connection to Internet2 is through the GigaPoP located in Kansas
City and supported by the Great Plains Network
(GPN), a consortium of Great Plains states dedicated to supporting scientific
research through the use of networking technology.
With Internet2 access, MOREnet customers are able to take advantage
of applications that require end-to-end, high-capacity bandwidth and robust network
capabilities. Advanced applications
enable collaboration among people and interactive access to information and resources
in ways not possible on today's Internet. They deliver qualitative and quantitative
improvements in how we conduct research and engage in teaching and learning. Moreover,
they require advanced networks to function properly.
Internet2
Internet2 is a consortium established in 1997 among the nation's top research universities, in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today's Internet in its infancy.
The mission of Internet2 is to facilitate and coordinate the development, deployment, operation and technology transfer of advanced, network-based applications and network services to further U.S. leadership in research and higher education and accelerate the availability of new services and applications on the Internet.
MOREnet & Internet2
MOREnet was one of the first state education networks to receive
designation as a Sponsored Educational Group Participant (SEGP) under a new policy
sponsored by the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID),
the organization leading both the Internet2
and Abilene projects.
Through this program, the MOREnet network is connected to Internet2.
MOREnet is one of the few state networks to accommodate the
diverse needs of higher education, elementary and secondary education, public
libraries, state government and other organizations in a single, cost-effective
network. The network, based on industry standards,
was designed to be highly scalable to grow easily with the increasing bandwidth
needs of MOREnet's customers and to support current and emerging network technologies.
MOREnet & the I2 K20 Initiative
MOREnet participates in the Internet2
K20 Initiative. The mission of the I2 K20 Initiative is to enable the development
and use of Internet applications, tools and content to enhance teaching and learning
and in other ways that further the mission of elementary, secondary and postsecondary
education in the United States.
A major part of MOREnet's efforts in the I2 K20 Initiative is
to serve as a facilitator, assisting Missouri institutions in collaborative
projects that do not employ advanced network services but nonetheless use
the Internet in meaningful ways to enhance teaching and learning, such as Project
Neptune, Project Feeder Watch
and ThinkQuest.
MOREnet also works to facilitate strong working relationships
among Missouri's K-12 and higher education institutions and seeks input on the
kinds of applications that are important to customers.
